GENERATION 1 - William Ernest Todd Sr.

 

1 Dr. William, Ernest TODD Sr. was born 1782/84, Dublin, Ireland, he worked as an Assistant Surgeon in the British Royal Navy 1809-1815 and as Surgeon and Chief Fur Trader with the Hudson Bay Company in Canada 1816-1851. He died Dec. 22, 1851 at his homestead in St. James, Manitoba. Ref: RRS #469, Charles Denney Genealogy Collection No. 446,000 (Glenbow Museum). An article printed in The Manitoba Free Press dated Jan. 21, 1916, titled AN EARLY SETTLER, referring to his daughter Mary TODD INKSTER "...she was the daughter of Dr. William Todd who came to Canada from Dublin, Ireland as Physician for the Hudson's Bay Company at York Factory..." this article goes on to mention his past service "...as surgeon in the British navy", "he stood 6'3"in height, and was a well known figure in western Canada".

 

+ Marianne BALLENTYNE or TREATHLEY or TRUETTE, Metis, 1st Wife, born 1804-5, married 'in the custom of the country' in York Factory, died between 1830-35 at York Factory.

 

+ Elizabeth Isabella DENNET(T), Metis, 2nd Wife, born 1804 at York Factory, married Dr. Todd in St. Johns Anglican Church by Rev. William Cochrane on Aug. 20, 1839. She was buried March 4, 1845. Her parents were Sophia BALLENTYNE, Metis, and William DENNETT, Scottish.

 

+ Jane JOHNSON, Metis, 3rd Wife, married August 16, 1849 at St. Andrew's Anglican Church, Red River Settlement. Their two sons were Albert TODD born 1847 and Samuel TODD born 1850. Following Dr. William Todd's death in 1851, Jane married Martin JENSEN, a Norwegian and had one daughter, Sarah Ann JENSEN born between 1865-69.

(NOTE: Dr. William TODD Sr.'s oldest son William TODD Jr. married Sarah Jane JOHNSTONE Sept. 17, 1849 not to be confused with Dr. TODD's 3rd wife Jane JOHNSON, they married August 16, 1849.)

 

2 Marianne TODD born Dec. 1822 York Factory, died. Mar. 16, 1823 in York Factory, St. John's Anglican Church Registry. Daughter of Marianne BALLANTYNE or TRUETTE and William TODD Sr.

 

2 Anne TODD, Metis, baptized June 8, 1830, residence Brandon House MB, buried May 8, 1844. A notation in a family bible belonging to family of James Todd states "Anne was not born of Elizabeth." and states on the baptize record card #188 "Todd, Ann of Brandon House, Daughter of William Todd, Trader and Half Breed Woman". The official Hudson Bay Company work record for Dr. William Todd, states that 'Marianne' was Anne's mother. Other records show Marianne was a BALLENTYNE another says THREATHLY and another TRUETTE.

 

2 William TODD Jr. baptized Sept. 7, 1823 York Factory, died July 18, 1871, Mapleton, MB. Son of Marianne BALLENTYNE and William Todd Sr. RRS #4958. On his Manitoba Scrip registration form he wrote mother BALLANTYNE Half Breed and father Dr.William TODD Irishman.

 

+ Sarah Jane JOHNSTON(E), Metis, 1st Wife, b. 1825, married William TODD Jr. Sep. 17, 1849 at St Andrew's Anglican, d. before 1868. She is the mother of all of William TODD Jr.'s children.

 

Sarah Janes's father was George JOHNSTONE b. 1796 in Sandwich, Orkney Islands, Scotland and died 1873 in St. Andrews, Red River Settlement, Manitoba. He was a Sloopmaster, Sailor, and Mate for the Hudson Bay Company 1817-1831. Her grandfather was Hugh JOHNSTONE b. Sep 1773 Birsay, Orkney Islands and died 1835 in Orkney Islands, Scotland. Her grandmother was Margaret BALDWIN b. 1780 in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Scotland. Sarah Jane's mother was Frances Martha THOMAS b. 1815 (or 1796)-1869 in Moose Factory, James Bay, Ontario, d. in St. Andrews, Red River Settlement, Manitoba. Sarah Jane's maternal grandparents were John THOMAS b. 1751 London, England and died 1822 in Vaudreuil, Quebec. He worked at Moose Factory, Ontario. Her mother was Margaret an Ojibway-Cree woman b. 1765-1813.

 

+ Fanny Anne HOURIE/HENRY, Metis, 2nd wife, born Aug. 12, 1842. She married William Todd Jr. on Aug. 27, 1868 at St. Clements Anglican Church, Mapleton, RRS, age 25. Their one daughter, Mary Jane, was born 1870, baptized at St. Clements in Mapleton Nov. 27 1870 and died 1877, age 7. Fanny's mother was Jessie Janet Jane Dennet the sister of Isabella Dennet. Her father was John Hourie, a Farmer.

3 William James S. TODD, Metis, b. January 15, 1853 in St. Clements, Manitoba. The 1891 Census shows his address as Fort Pitt, SK, occupation Hudson Bay servant. He died January 21, 1895 and is buried in the Catholic Mission Cemetery in St. Albert, AB. Mother was Sarah Jane JOHNSTONE and William TODD Jr. RRS #4961, Scrip Cert. 2055.


+ Marie/Mary DUFRESNE, Metis, b.1865 in Saskatchewan. The 1881 Census shows her as a Teacher, her birthdate as 1867 (1865 for the 1891 Census), her birthplace: NWT, age: 16, Married, ethnic origin: French, family head: William Todd, religion: Roman Catholic, census place: Battleford Territories, NWT. In 1884 Marie/Mary DUFRESNE and William TODD were living in Bresaylor, Saskatchewan. In the spring of 1885, while living in Fort Pitt, SK, they were taken prisoner along with her parents and siblings into the camp of Big Bear during the Riel Rebellion and under force were moved about the countryside from April - June of 1885. Fort Pitt was their residence location during the 1891 Census.

 

+ James HOUSE / HOWSE, 2nd Husband and lived on a farm near Lafond, Alberta 11 miles south of St. Paul, AB at SW 30-T 56-R 10-W4. She had five more children. She died May 2, 1945 and she and her husband James HOUSE / HOWSE are buried at Frog Lake Cemetery, Heinsburg, Alberta.

+ William John LABOUCAN(E), Metis, b. 1880, married after 1907. In 1907 they became Godparents to Robert James TODD who was Mary's brother James TODD's son. William LABOUCAN died in 1955. They farmed near St. Paul, AB - NE 2-58-10-4. Homestead registered March 23, 1909 in St. Paul.

4 James Robert TODD, Metis, born May 3, 1882 at Fort Pitt, Saskatchewan. Son of William James S. TODD and Marie DUFRESNE. He married Caroline LAFRAMBOISE January 27, 1903. They worked Homestead farms first between Two Hills and Warwick, AB, 2nd in St. Paul des Metis, and one on Hastings Lake, AB near Tofield. James died Oct. 22, 1967, in Rossdale Flats, Edmonton and is buried beside his wife Caroline Laframboise and several of their family at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery on the St. Albert Trail. Scrip Cert. Form E, #1346, Claim 2049 and Scrip Cert. form D #1964 for $40.00.

 

+ Caroline LAFRAMBOISE, Metis, born July 6, 1887 in Alberta, the daugher of Louis LAFRAMBOISE Jr. who was born 1851 in North Dakota. Caroline's birth mother was Eleanor Cardinal and her adoptive mother, Isabelle Cardinal was Eleanor's sister. CARDINAL. She married January 27, 1903 with James Robert TODD. Her adopted siblings were 1) Maggie (Margaret) CARDINAL born 1888, married Theodore POITRAS, she died in 1922. 2) Flora CARDINAL born 1895, her cousin, the daughter of Melanie CARDINAL the sister of Isabelle and Eleanor CARDINAL. Flora married David ROSS. 3) William born 1886. Caroline Laframboise Todd died Sept. 9, 1964.

He lived in St. Francois Xavier, RRS, and apprenticed as Postmaster in Athabasca 1842-52. Between 1858-72 he was the Postmaster at Cumberland House, 1873-83 Postmaster, Clerk at Big Trout Lake, Severn District. The 1881 Canadian Census states his occupation was Clerk with the Hudson Bay Co., married, Indigenous, religion: Church of England, census location was York Factory, NWT. He died Jan.13, 1887. RRS #4959, 1885 Script #1643 C-14942. Scrip Ref. from National Archives states Elizabeth DENNETT is his mother (the daughter of Sophia BALLENDEN/TYNE, Metis and William DENNETT, Scottish).

The 1881 Canadian Census states birthdate as 1836 in Manitoba, age 46, married, ethnic origin: Indigenous, religion: Roman Catholic, census location was York Factory, NWT.

2 Samuel TODD b. Feb. 1827 York Factory, baptized Sept. 4, 1827, buried Oct. 9, 1827. Baptism record says "Son of Dr. William TODD, Late Surgeon of York Factory and Isabella DENNET" were the parents.

 

2 Robert TODD b. May 30, 1832 at Brandon House, MB and baptized May 30, 1832. The Baptism record card #367 states "Son of Chief Trader William TODD and Isabella DENNET", St. John's Cathedral O. Jones and W. Cockran officiating. He became an Apprentice Postmaster from 1849-51 in the Swan River District, MB and in 1852 in the Columbia District. In 1854 the HBCo sent him to the Thompson River Post in Kamloops where he lived for the next 50 years working at 'Kamp Kamloops'. He died in Dec. 6, 1905.

 

2 John McAllum TODD Sr. b. Nov. 24, 1833 Fort Pelly in the Swan River District, MB, at St. John's Anglican, William Cockran Minister. Baptism record #668 states "Todd, John of Swan River, baptized July 22, 1834 Son of William Todd and Isabella DENNET" He married March 29, 1855 age 21, lived in St. James, MB, Farmer. He died 1896 in Seamo (Narcisse) MB, and is buried at St. John's Anglican. RRS #4698. He took Manitoba Scrip June 1875.

Matilda died in Seamo, MB, April 20, 1896 and was buried with her husband at St. Jame's Anglican. Script Claim #1653. Matilda's parents were Sarah FIDLER, Metis, and William WILLIAMS, English, of the HBC. Her maternal grandmother was Mary Indian, and her grandfather was Peter FIDLER, English, Land Surveyor. Matilda and her brother were brought up by James and Sarah HALLETT

2 Donald TODD born 1837 or 39, baptism record card #1177 states "Todd, Donald of Ft. Pelly baptised July 4, 1839, son of Willam TODD and Elizabeth". The 1881 Census lists a Donald TODD b. 1837 in the NWT, occupation: Farmer, ethnic origin: Scottish, religion: Church of England, Census place: Edmonton Territories, NWT. He was a self-taught doctor and ran the mail from Fort Edmonton. Susan and Donald kept a wayside inn for travelers called Todd's Crossing on the well travelled trail over the Battle River between Wetaskiwin and Camrose.

Her parents were Louis DURAND and Marie Petit CHASSEUR, her grandparents were Paul DURAND dit DUMONT and Marie AHE-KE-KAH-NA-AH-TAHT METISSE. Gabriel DUMONT was Godfather to Susan and her half brother Jacob WARD. During the 1901 Census she was living in Wetaskwin. During the 1906 Census she reported living with her son Dan TODD and his wife Mary WHITFORD, she was then 53 years old. She is buried at the Bashaw Cemetery, AB 1885. Suzanne was a fluent Cree speaker, HB Script #1022, C-14938.

Her baptism record #1186 noted "Daughter of William Todd and Elizabeth". St. Johns. Her Manitoba Scrip states Isabelle DENNET was her mother. On June 5, 1856, age 17, she married William INKSTER, age 20, at St. Johns Cathedral, St. Johns RRS by Rev. David. Her residence was shown as St. Cross and his St. Johns.
