Maria Todd was born on 2 February 1861. She was baptised at St. Jame Anglican Church on 3 March 1861. She is a daughter of John McAllum Todd and Matilda Williams. She taught school in the Lincoln School District in Posen, Manitoba in 1888 and was paid $26.00 per month. The Reeve at the time was W. A. Fidler.

Maria married an English widower, Herbert Plumb, a baker, born in Nottingham, UK in 1861. He was the son of Robert Plumb and Ann Branley. They married at Holy Trinity Anglican Church in Headingly, Manitoba on 15 May 1889. Witnesses were Florence Isbister and Willoughby Mills. The couple lived on Logan Avenue in Winnipeg.
